Just remove the color, right? Not necessarily. Sure, the photo will be black and white, but it will likely look flat and lack any character at all. With the proper processing, black and white portraits can add drama, character and can even "pop." Below is a photo of some red roses and their green stems. Just removing the color causes the photo to lose dimension. By processing the photo manually, the flowers pop against the stem and leaves.

After converting the portrait to black and white using the technique described above, a reddish-brown tone (a tone referred to as "sepia") is added to the portrait. This can help make a modern portrait look like it is over 100 years old for that antiqued look. Want to add more drama? With some additional processing, you'll swear that portrait was taken using an old-time camera!

Removing some of the color saturation from a photo can add an interesting feel, too. Not quite black and white or sepia…not quite color. A combination of black and white and low saturation in concentrated areas offers a unique look, too. Below is an example of each.

One of the newest styles of portraits styles involves extremely high levels of contrast and low levels of saturation. This offers extreme drama when the subject's face has lots of character brought on by deep wrinkles or heavy shadowing. Obviously this isn't a look you want for an bride's engagement photo. But this technique is ideal for a dramatic portrait of a woodworker or cowboy.

Almost a complete opposite of a high contrast effect where all facial details are exaggerated, soft focus smooths out imperfections and provides a whimsical and airy effect. This effect is especially appropriate when the portrait is of babies and children or is taken with nature's beauty as the backdrop, such as a field of wild flowers in the springtime.
